Pair Creation at Shocks : Application to the High Energy Emission of Compact objects

چکیده
We investigate the effect of pair creation on a shock structure. Actually, particles accelerated by a shock can be sufficiently energetic to boost, via Inverse Compton (IC) process for example, surrounding soft photons above the rest mass electron energy and thus to trigger the pair creation process. The increase of the associated pair pressure is thus able to disrupt the plasma flow and possibly, for too high pressure, to smooth it completely. Reversely, significant changes of the flow velocity profile may modify the distribution function of the accelerated particles, modifying consequently the pair creation rate. Stationary states are then obtained by solving self-consistently for the particle distribution function and the flow velocity profile. We discuss our results and the application of these processes to the high energy emission and variability of compact objects.

application to the high energy emission of compact objects
We investigate the effect of pair creation on a shock structure. Particles, accelerated in the shock via the first order Fermi process, are supposed to cool by inverse Compton process on external soft photons, resulting in a cutoff power law shape of the particle distribution function. The high energy photons produced are thus able to create pairs, through photon-photon annihilation. The increa...
متن کاملOn the Viewing Angle Dependence of Blazar Variability
Internal shocks propagating through an ambient radiation field, are subject to a radiative drag that, under certain conditions, can significantly affect their dynamics and, consequently, the evolution of the beaming cone of emission produced behind the shocks. The resultant change of the Doppler factor combined with opacity effects leads to a strong dependence of the variability pattern produce...
متن کاملAgn Models: High-energy Emission
Astrophysical models for the high-energy emission of blazars are reviewed. Blazars ejecting relativistic radio jets at small angles to the line-of-sight are the only type of active galactic nuclei (AGN) discovered above 100 MeV. The γ-rays apparently originate in the jets which explains the absence of γ-ray pair creation attenuation. The bulk Lorentz factor of the radio jets is much smaller tha...
متن کاملEmission Spectra from Internal Shocks in Gamma-Ray-Burst Sources
Unsteady activity of γ-ray burst sources leads to internal shocks in their emergent relativistic wind. We study the emission spectra from such shocks, assuming that they produce a power-law distribution of relativistic electrons and posses strong magnetic fields. The synchrotron radiation emitted by the accelerated electrons is Compton up-scattered multiple times by the same electrons. A substa...
متن کاملEmission Processes of High Energy Gamma Rays from Gamma-ray Bursts
Synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process in the reverse shocks of gammaray bursts is suggested to be responsible for the observed prompt highenergy gamma-ray emissions from several gamma-ray bursts. We find that the SSC emission from the reverse shocks dominates over other emission processes in energy bands from tens of MeV to tens of GeV, for a wide range of shock parameters. This model is favor...
